A landmark of St. Louis fashion and industry

Built inside the historical International Shoe Co. building

Steeped in history and architectural richness, The Last Hotel embodies the preservation, restoration and reinvention of the International Shoe Company. Originally opened in 1909, the iconic building boasts elaborate stone carvings, ornate metalwork and terrazzo floors all in the Neoclassical and Art Deco styles. By forging a marriage of historic details and modern interiors, The Last comes alive with renewed energy while nodding to a bygone era. Located in the heart of the Washington Avenue Garment District, The Last Hotel carries the torch of culture and growth in downtown St. Louis.

Honoring the craftsmen and makers of St. Louis

Featuring local goods and crafted experiences

In the early 1900s, the International Shoe Company was the largest show company in the world, producing nearly 50 million pairs a year. Thanks to its vast network of tanneries, the company proudly supplied eager buyers with styles that ranged from rugged HyTest safety boots and the Velvet Step brand’s “exquisitely simple pumps,” to the Poll-Parrot children’s shoes that promised to “keep youngers on their toes with pep!” The people of St. Louis took great pride in being home to a company that was held in such high regard throughout the industry.

A name with solid meaning

Remembering the tools of the industry

Paying homage to our roots, our name is a whimsical nod to the age-old craft of shoemaking. Considered the most vital element of shoemaking, a “last” is the wooden form shaped similarly to that of a human foot and used to retain each design’s distinctive shape while leather carefully is fitted on it. The word “last” is derived from the Old English laest, meaning footprint, and shoemakers think of it “the soul of the shoe.” Hence, The Last Hotel.
